Paklenica and the waterfalls

Activities: hiking, rafting or canoing, caving.

Locations: Paklenica National Park, Plitvice Lakes National Park, VelebitNature Park, Zadar.

- Day 1, Monday:

Arrival, transfer to our hotel or pension in Paklenica region.

Welcome drink, dinner. 

 

- Day 2, Tuesday: Plitvice lakes. 6 hours hiking, up 200 m.

During 6 to 7 hours walk, we will enjoy one of the most

fascinating aspect of the specific geological and

hydro-geological phenomenon of karst.

We will slalom through the serie of 16 bigger and few smaller

lakes, gradually lined up and linked together by innumerable

cascades and waterfalls.

Back to our lodging at the end of the day. 

 

- Day 3, Wednesday: Paklenica 6 - 7 hours hiking, up 800 m.

We head to Paklenica NP and enter it through its "main

entrance", the Velika paklenica creek. It begins with a

fantastic rocky canyon and while going up along the torrent

we will see the vegetation changes. Progressively, the

Mediterranean one gives more space to pine and beech

forests.

Passing the hamlet of Jurline and its hive we will continue

towards Velika Mocila and Brezimenjaca to finally get in the

hamlet of Ramici where our hosts will be waiting for us for

dinner.

We will lodge there in an old typical shepherd house.

It is also possible to chose a more strenuous hiking by entering

through the Mala Paklenica creek and joining Velika Paklenica

canyon.

 

- Day 4, Thursday: the Zrmanja river

In the morning we go down the mountain through the majestic

canyon of Velika Paklenica, we will follow the torrent passing

along the foot of the imposing rock of Anica Kuk (more than

400 meters in height) where we will be able to observe ones

climbing it before arriving in Starigrad-Paklenica from where

we'll drive for an hour to the starting point of our adventure of

the day:

Rafting or canoing, depending on the water level on

the famous Zrmanja River within the natural reserve of Velebit!

This river considered as one of the most beautiful karstic

rivers by the Croatian geologists has, during millenniums, dug a

deep canyon sometimes reaching a 300 meters depth.

We will be carried by his current during more than 4 hours

across falls, sedimentary cascades and barriers to a green

meadow where we will have lunch.

Dinner and lodging will take place in an hotel or pension in

Paklenica region. 

 

- Day 5, Friday: the Krupa river in Velebit nature park.

5 to 6 hours hiking, up 200 m.


Hiking along the Krupa river, one of the most beautiful karst

river in Croatia. We'll start at the Krupa monastery and its

fertile fields from where the river spread toward a canyon

passing next to its tributary Krnjeza.


Downstream of Krnjeza the canyon suddenly open on a

spacious weedy travertine barrier made of 9 cascades wich

end with a 13 meters fall at Kudin Bridge. Built in the 19th

century, it is made of 12 arches.

On our way out of the canyon, we will meet the local

shepherd, he will surely invite us to taste his delicious fresh

goat yogurt before we go back to our lodging.

 

- Day 6, Saturday:

After breakfast and before going to the millennial city of

Zadar, we will stop for a "cave adventure" in the 830 meters

long Modric cave:

Our speleo guide will lead us through secret labyrinths and

narrow passages to spectacular halls where strange host

await us: pipe organs, cuttlefishes, crabs, fairies...

The list of surprises nature and imagination can provide

under the light of carbide lamps is practically unlimited.

After those fascinating 2 hours we'll continue towards Zadar

where we will have lunch. In the afternoon, you will be free to

visit the old town or simply go to the beach. At the end of the

day, transfer to the airport for those who are leaving.
